Day Trip to Antarctica - WOW!
The weather in Antarctica was projected to be good enough for the
small aircraft to make the trip from Punta Arenas to King George
Island in Antarctica. This was a once-in-a-lifetime
experience although I am still young so I intend to go visit
penguins again some time in the future! We first had to go
to mandatory briefing at DAP Airlines office the day before, in
order to be allowed to fly. The flight was on a Beechcraft
King Air 300 which is highly resistant to adverse weather, and is
often used as a private jet by many companies. It can carry
only 6 passengers so it felt very private, we were accompanied by
two couples from Hungary.
Once arrived in Antarctica we were welcomed at the Russian
research station and they put a Zodiac boat in the water for us to
go explore a glacier and another island with hundreds of
penguins. We also visited the southern-most church in the
world, the Orthodox Russian church near the research
station. It was very tiny but it was heated so we could warm
up a bit after spending so much time outdoors in the cold.
Thankfully it was sunny and the wind was not too bad but I can
imagine some people having a harsh day trip if weather conditions
are different!
